A learning pathway for everyone who spends other people's money
Written for the people who actually do the work: crew, captains, heads of department, brokers, managers, owners and suppliers. Read the core in an hour. Then go to your role.
The core
Five ideas everyone needs
The subtle differences between a commission, a kickback, a gift and a bribe are what trip people up. These five pieces cover them in order, and each takes about ten minutes.
- 1. How the APA works
- 2. Commission or kickback?
- 3. Gifts and hospitality: where the line is
- 4. If you are asked for a bribe
- 5. Why you must report it
Also: the excuses, answered.
- 1
Whose money is it?
Anyone spending money for someone else is an agent, and owes loyalty to the person whose money it is. Start here.
- 2
Commission or kickback?
The same money can be lawful or a crime. The difference is whether the person whose money it was knew, and agreed.
- 3
Gifts and hospitality: where the line is
Five tests, a green, amber and red list, and the situations that catch people out.
- 4
If you are asked for a bribe, or offered one
Asking and offering are offences even if nothing is paid. Refuse, record, report.
- 5
Why you must report it
A practice that depends on everyone's silence ends when enough people stop being silent.
By role
Then go to your part of the industry
Crew, captains and heads of department
Start with the core, then use the cheat sheet for your role. Captains and managers can run the induction for every new joiner.
Charter and sales brokers
Your commission belongs in the contract. Anything else paid to you on a client's deal belongs in front of the client.
Management companies
Turn a policy on paper into a control that works: training, audit, a safe channel and a supplier declaration.
Owners and guests
Ask who is paid on your charter and where the discounts go. A short, polite letter does it.
Suppliers and vendors
Win and keep business without paying for it. Make the promise, adopt the policy, train your team.
Running a session on board or in the office?
The crew induction programme is a ready-made hour for every new joiner. The training pack does the same for a sales team. Both include scenarios, a quiz and a sign-off sheet.
